Yesterday was a remarkable day for Sparkling Minds Association as we had the privilege of delivering much-needed support to vulnerable families in the Moroto, Bandarini, and Kaachonjo communities. Thanks to the generous donation from Loreto Convent Mombasa, we distributed over 180 kg of food, ensuring three families will have food security for an entire month.

Bringing Relief to Those in Need

Food insecurity is a major challenge for many families in these areas, where finding consistent, nutritious meals can be a daily struggle. By providing staples such as flour, rice, beans, and cooking oil, we aim to ease the burden on these families, allowing them to focus on other urgent needs and build a path to a more stable future.

During the Cultural Week celebrations at the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM), Sparkling Minds Association took a significant step towards promoting environmental sustainability by donating 1,200 seedlings for planting at TUM’s Kwale Campus. This initiative aligns perfectly with our ongoing commitment to creating a greener, healthier future for our communities.

Supporting a Greener Tomorrow

At Sparkling Minds, we believe that every tree planted is a step towards a better environment. Our donation supports TUM’s ambitious goal of planting 10,000 trees, an effort aimed at restoring local ecosystems, enhancing biodiversity, and combating climate change. The seedlings include a mix of indigenous and fast-growing tree species, selected to thrive in the local climate and contribute to long-term environmental health.

Today, Sparkling Minds Association was proud to be part of a powerful initiative to protect our environment as we joined hands with an incredible lineup of partners for the 1st Inter-County Beach Cleaning event. Together, we took a big step towards a cleaner, greener future, removing 169 kg of trash from our beautiful shores.

A Collective Effort for a Cleaner Coastline

This event brought together a diverse group of organizations and volunteers, all united by a shared mission to preserve our coastal environment. We were thrilled to collaborate with Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), UCESCO Africa, Light Academy Nairobi, Kitaka Foundation, Nuru-Horizon Foundation, Fuli Africa, MUCSA, Edifier’s Likoni Divers, Rovers Crew, and Response Titans. Their enthusiasm, commitment, and hard work made this cleanup a resounding success.

The Impact of Beach Cleanups

Beach cleanups are vital for maintaining the health of our oceans and coastlines. Every piece of trash collected helps to protect marine life, reduce pollution, and keep our beaches safe and beautiful. By removing plastic, debris, and other waste, we prevent harmful materials from entering the ocean, where they can cause significant damage to ecosystems and wildlife.

Likoni Joins the Global Movement for a Cleaner Ocean: International Coastal Cleanup Day 2024

On September 21, 2024, the Likoni Chapter of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), spearheaded by Sparkling Minds Association, gathered volunteers, local organizations, and community members at Shelly Beach, Likoni, to mark the annual International Coastal Cleanup Day. This event was part of a worldwide effort, organized through Ocean Conservancy, to combat ocean pollution and protect marine life.

In collaboration with local partners like Likoni Walk Movement, Hakuna Kulala, Amoriti Media, Barracuda Restaurant, Kitaka Foundation, and the Kenya Navy, the cleanup drew significant support from various stakeholders. The turnout included youth groups, schools, NGOs, and community volunteers, all united by a shared commitment to safeguard the coastline from plastic debris and waste.

A United Effort for a Cleaner Beach

The day started early, with volunteers equipped with gloves, garbage bags, and a determination to make a difference. The teams spread out along the shoreline, collecting an alarming amount of waste, including plastic bottles, fishing nets, and other debris that littered the beach.

“We are overwhelmed by the support from our community partners and volunteers,” said a representative from Sparkling Minds Association. “This cleanup is not just about picking up trash; it’s about fostering a culture of environmental stewardship and raising awareness about the impact of plastic pollution on our oceans.”

The Kenya Navy played a significant role, bringing in a team of officers who worked tirelessly alongside community members. Their involvement underscored the importance of protecting our coastlines and maintaining the safety and cleanliness of Kenya’s waters.

Partnering for a Sustainable Future

The event saw the involvement of key supporting partners, including the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Kenya Wildlife Service, Marafiki Relief Aid Africa, and UCESCO Africa, among others. These organizations provided logistical support, helped with waste management, and educated participants on the importance of reducing single-use plastics.

The Kenya Coast Guard Service also contributed to the event’s success, highlighting the need for collective action to safeguard Kenya’s coastal ecosystems. Their presence, alongside the Kenya Navy, was a powerful reminder of the collaborative efforts required to preserve marine life and coastal resources.

As the cleanup drew to a close, participants reflected on the day’s achievements. The bags of collected waste served as a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of plastic pollution.
